Two weeks after A's catcher Sean Murphy was traded to the Atlanta Braves, he received a six-year, $73 million contract from the Braves.

As you know, the whole A's payroll is way under $70 million.

Las Vegas Raiders 34

Happy New Year, San Francisco

(Las Vegas, not so much)

Week 17: San Francisco 49ers 37, Las Vegas Raider 34 (0vertime)

In a nail-biter not many expected, two relatively unknown QBs led their teams in an Epic Battle which went into overtime.

The CARR keys had been handed to Raider QB Jarrett Stidham, and he excelled with long passes in the 1st quarter and a TD pass, matched by 49er's own wunderkind, Brock Purdy, who hit Brandon Aiyuk, a superstar this day, with a dart for a TD with 7:06 left in the 1st Q. The Raiders took a 10-7 lead after passes to Davante Adams, and a FG made it 10-7, LV, to end the 1st Q.

After dynamic Christian McCaffery (CMC) runs, 13 plays, 75 yards and a pass to George Kittle made it 14-10, SF. In a Deja Vu from earlier games, the Niners stuffed the Raiders on the One. SF would punt. A Stidham 60-yard TD pass to Adams made it 17-14 LV at Halftime.

The Niners were stopped on their first drive of the 2nd half, and LV scored on another long pass to Adams to make it 24-14, LV.  Aiyuk, CMC and Davis-Price combined for 49er runs and passes and it was soon 24-21, LV, after CMC scored as the 3rd Q came to a close.  But on a big play, Kerry Hyder Jr. tipped a Stidham pass which was grabbed by Drake "Long Arms" Jackson, and a 43-yard FG by Robbie Gould tied it at 24.

A follow up 32-yard FG gave the Niners a 27-24 lead, but a Raider 57-yard FG tied it at 27. Great plays by Aiyuk and CMC were capped by Jordan Mason's Gore-style run and his first NFL TD, to make it 34-27, SF. However, a pass interference in the end zone allowed LV to tie it at 34. With just over a minute left, four bullet passes to Aiyuk and one to CMC set it up for a 41-yard field goal try, which was wide right. Overtime had arrived.

Vegas won the coin toss. After Josh Jacobs helped move the Raiders downfield, Stidham dropped back to pass and Bosa pushed a lineman into him and Tashaun Gipson Jr. ran the wobbler pass back 56 yards to the 3-yard line. Next, it was time for the Raiders to be Eliminated from the playoffs. Robbie Gould hit from the 23-yard line, and the 49ers claimed a 37-34 victory! Happy New Year! 49ers Win!

Grove Market Q&A

Sal Zavala runs the Produce Section at Grove Market in Pacific Grove, Sports Today's Monterey Peninsula HQ and an oasis for sports fans of all stripes. As we chatted at my recent Pot Pie Wednesday visit, I pressed Sal for a quote for Sports Today on any sports issue which might be on his mind. He was hesitant, but after deep thought, forcefully responded: "The 49ers will go to the Super Bowl and Brock Purdy will be named MVP."

Pleased with the response, I scribbled it on a Post-It, thanked him, grabbed an organic cantaloupe and checked out, with a cartload of food and a bold prediction.

To paraphrase the great Mike Krukow, when you're at Grove Market, "Grab some Prime, Meat!"

Conflict

I can't decide which is better: the Niners' win or the Raiders loss.

They're both so sweet.

Cal came out fast and built a 10-point lead in the first minutes of the game. At one point Cal had a 21-point lead, and then slowly battled the Buffaloes from making an amazing comeback in the closing seconds. A surprise win for Cal! Turning Dreams Into Reality

by Andy Dolich

Over the past few years, Major League Baseball has created a number of self-inflicted business wounds – a lockout, shutting down 40 Minor League teams, ongoing stadium problems with Oakland and Tampa Bay – all while attendance diminished significantly due to the pandemic.

A clear victory was the Field of Dreams game in Dyersville, Iowa, which came and went as if in a dream. In addition, the long overdue induction of Negro League legend Buck O’Neil into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown was a significant event to celebrate.

So, why not stage the next Field of Dreams game at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Ala., or a venue in or around Kansas City, the home of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. The business-building opportunities for baseball are significant.

I have spent my adult life in the sports business world, 14 of those years as an executive with the Oakland A’s (1980-1994). We promoted several events celebrating the rich history of Oakland-born African American players before and after Jackie Robinson broke the color line in 1947. In the mid-1980s, we proudly presented a major Birmingham Black Barons/Negro League night at the Coliseum.

The history books show that Rickwood Field was a true field of dreams for hundreds of Black ballplayers who were restricted from playing in the majors until 1947. This would be a wonderfully proactive way for MLB to create a national teamwork-focused celebration, including the groups below. It also would show millions of baseball fans around the country that the game of baseball has heart, soul and commitment to true diversity. It could underscore that successful entities exemplify teamwork, leadership and trust in our increasingly divided country.

Willie Mays was born in Westfield, Ala., which is just nine miles from Birmingham’s Rickwood Field. You can’t make this up. Rickwood is also the oldest professional ballpark in the United States. Mays is now 91, and Rachel Robinson, Jackie’s wife, is 100. Think of the history that they represent in the fight for equality in our country.

Giants agree to three-year contract with

LHP Taylor Rogers

The Giants and left-handed pitcher Taylor Rogers agreed to terms on a three-year Major League contract. Rogers, 32, the twin brother of current Giants right-handed pitcher Tyler Rogers, was 4-8 with 31 saves and a 4.76 ERA in 66 combined games last season between San Diego (42 games) and Milwaukee (24 games). Rogers struck out 84 batters in 64.1 innings last season for a 11.8 K/9ip ratio, the highest of his career over a full season. He limited left-handed batters to a .167 (10-for-60) average last season while only allowing three extra-base hits to lefties (one double, two triples) and a .511 OPS.

The agreement is worth $33 million. Rogers will make $9 million in 2023 and $12 million in both 2024 and 2025. Additionally, Rogers will make a donation to the Giants Community Fund of $45,000 in 2023 as well as $60,000 in both 2024 and 2025.

Winter Quarter 2023 -- BUS 119

Title: Make Sense of the Madness:

The Evolving Business of College Athletics

Instructor -- Andy Dolich

The business of college athletics is booming. Close to 2,000 athletic departments throughout the U.S. generate $25.5 billion in media rights while attracting over 190 million enthusiastic, ticket-buying fans. This industry is evolving real-time in increasingly complex ways. The recent news that USC and UCLA are leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten Conference has created waves of uncertainty and speculation about the future. Just a year ago, college athletes were first permitted to profit from the rights for their Name, Image, or Likeness (NIL) while on the playing fields of their schools. What do these seismic changes mean for college athletes, administrators, and fans now and

in the future?

This course examines the business of college sports past,

present and future.

Session One -- Introduction on the Business of College Sports

Session Two -- Overview of the changes in the Pac-12 and beyond -- Ted Robinson

Session Three -- Economics -- Dr. Dan Rascher

Session Four -- The Media -- Jon Wilner

Session Five -- Athletes and coaches - Ben Braun

Session Six -- Final Round -- Table with representatives of involved

constituencies.

Sessions will include interactive discussions from industry experts.

Students will leave this course with insights into the revolutionary changes affecting the business of college sports.

4 Questions facing the A's in the New Year

By Martín Gallegos  @MartinJGallegos

The onset of a new year means Spring Training is just a couple of months away. For the A's, more moves are likely to be made to address roster needs before reporting to Mesa, Ariz., for Cactus League action. As the club currently stands, here are some questions that will need to be answered before reaching that point.

DUBS Ball

The Dubs Are/Will Be Alright

by Howard Pearlstein

I wrote last week’s column after the Nets game to point out the different moving pieces that had to come together -- and were moving, but at their own pace, sometimes slowly, sometimes, for a time, not at all, or bumping into each other like tectonic plates in a 6.9.

When the pre-game said that not only were Steph and Wiggins out, but ALSO Donte, I despaired, since he has pretty much always been the bench player who steps waaay up when starters aren’t playing.

I did NOT mention that in the first quarter of that game I thought the Dubs looked like a High School Team playing an NBA team . I did not call it what it was – the Perfect Storm of FUBAR. Why rub it in? The players ALWAYS know better and more painfully than the public or the press how bad a game was.

But the first home game Christmas day against the Grizzlies, it was the refs who looked like they were High School kids, as if a bunch of zit-coated clueless, unpopular, un-coordinated kids became Hall Monitors. POWER-CRAZED! More like Junior High -- calling fouls that didn’t happen and throwing out Technicals like tawdries at Mardi Gras.

During the first half, I saw a Grizz player, standing on the near side of the backcourt, both away from the ball, looked like he punched Donte DiVincenzo in the face.

It was *Bonhoeffer’s Theory of Stupidity, that “Stupidity is more dangerous than evil, since one may protest against evil….against stupidity we are defenseless... Reason falls on deaf ears.”

In the NBA, sometimes, when stupidity rules you get a Technical (aka 2 Strikes and y’er out). Or maybe having to work on Christmas Day was kind of like Jury Duty and the only ones left were culled from behind the Ref Bench and below the bottom of the barrel.

But wotthehell boss, ‘tis the season to forgive. And the important thing is the Dubs prevailed. And prevailed again. (Does no one remember that last year, it was all Doom and Gloom toward the end of the season. Many were predicting the way things looked, they wouldn’t even get into the playoffs)

And as far as prevailing goes, Wednesday’s game was historical, at least in the annals of irony, with pre-game reminders about the last game against Utah that was a Dubs Win until the last two heart-breaking minutes and the Dubs lost by four.

Turnabout is more than fair play – it requires top level all-pro play. The Dubs trailed all the way by 10 points and more, until the ad hoc lineup led by Two-ways and “Who’s that?” came back in the final minutes to win by five. Bench players playing like the All-Stars they were hoped to someday be. Wednesday night, they were all that -- PBJ, Ty Jerome, Lamb, Moody, et al.

Utah is tough, but I still say, there ain’t no jazz in Utah.

I saw something in that game I’ve never seen before – James Wiseman flashing a great big Bill Russell teeth-flashing light-up-the-place smile while on the court, right after tricking a Jazz player into touching the ball and before it went out of bounds.

Not to say I expect them to win every game when they’re at home, but, well… maybe. So enjoy it while they’re at home, and when they have to take it on the road again, who knows?

*(Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a minister/theologian who died in the Nazi Flossenberg Concentration Camp in April of 1945.

Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.

An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

More than a cookbook, this culinary delight was written to preserve a great chef's traditional family recipes and stories of her childhood for her far-flung grandchildren. Author Leonie Samuel-Hool recounts stories of a vanished society and legends of the gods and goddesses that protect and sometimes make mischief in Indonesian homes, fields and foods. The recipes are explicitly presented.

The absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1853 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. "The Yankee Way," Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's foreword, is "full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competition, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods." By Charlie Silvera with Dave Newhouse (Author).

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
